KANE WEDDING

I don’t like to pick favorites, but if I did, Alicia and Colin would be one of my favorite couples. Alicia and I have already decided we’re going to stay friends after their wedding day :)

When I met Alicia, we chatted for well over two hours with only 10 minutes of that conversation being about their wedding. She told me how their hearts were left in third world nations and about their dreams for serving the world through their passion in medicine. We also talked about how every piece of their wedding day was intentionally chosen to be reflective of their families’ culture, their friendships, faith, and their own memories. They had planned to get married in the woods, but sadly their venue burned down a few months before their date. They were left scrambling (while both in medical school, mind you) to find a new venue and make a new plan.

Even though their original vision didn’t come to fruition, the heart and intention of their day was the same:  having everyone they care about in one space, celebrating, laughing, and dancing.

My favorite moments:

// Alicia has a magnetic personality. Everyone loves to be around her, and she instantly makes you feel like you’ve known each other for decades. I found myself smiling, crying, and feeling like part of their beautiful community of friends and family. The preparation time was one of my favorites because she invited so many cousins, aunts, and friends to stop by and say hello. Everyone was greeted with a huge hug and a story of how they met.

// Every detail was sentimental. Alicia wore the skirt of her grandmother’s dress, and her mother sewed the corset with buttons and other lace details from her dress. Colin made his wedding band out of a Ugandan shilling (Alicia wrote, “a place that awoke his heart and emboldened him to serve in the developing world.”). They homebrewed the beer that was served at the reception. They had Italian cupcakes and danced the tarantella as a nod to Alicia’s heritage. The food was delicious chicken + waffles, grits, and other Southern delicacies to share in Colin’s family culture. I heard many stories throughout the day of how and why every detail was significant. I loved how much effort they put into making sure their day was filled with so much meaning.

// While the girls were getting ready, the champagne popped itself! I had never seen that happen before. Alicia noted that it was probably a good omen for a great celebration.

// Alicia told me that she had never seen Colin cry before, but she watched him tear up as she walked down the aisle. I also loved their personal vows and that they served communion to all of their guests.

// The father-daughter dance had everyone in tears (including myself). Her dad was beaming in that moment as they glided along the dance floor.

// Colin surprised Alicia with a tandem bike for their exit, in memory of their first date when they had ridden bikes to dinner.
