I met Derek and Theresa while photographing my dear friends, Lisa + Menotti, at their wedding in Lake Tahoe. At the reception, Derek told me that they were engaged. I jokingly said, Do you need a wedding photographer? I truly thought nothing would come of it.
Fast forward a year later and they were planning a wedding in Big Sur. I was booked and devastated. Life happened and their plans never came to fruition. Derek emailed me something along the lines of: Are you available Feb. 29th? Say yes because…Hawaii.
I replied in 15 minutes. Heck yes.
They started to plan a leap year elopement the following winter in Maui, a place that has always been special to them. They helped each other get ready but later met at a nearby park for a first look. Theresa walked along the cliff with the breeze gracefully blowing her veil as she met Derek to say their vows. They exchanged leis, rings, and promises. After the ceremony, a local musician strummed on his guitar while they had their first dance.
We loved getting to know Derek and Theresa during the trip. We dined with them the evening before their wedding and also hiked at sunrise the day after. It’s always an incredible honor to be the only witnesses to a ceremony and to be a part of such an intimate event. I have more images to share of our morning hike, but here are a few favorites from the wedding.
Also, we had the best time working with these vendors!
