What a year it has been.
After 19 weddings, 5 elopements, 35 sessions (most of them families), with travel to 11 states (CA, NC, NY, MI, CT, SC, NJ, CO, TN, NM, AL), I can safely say it’s been a busy and incredible year.
Wrapping up my twelfth season and looking over hundreds of thousands of images from the season brought introspection. I tried to tighten this collection to around 100 images, and I found a pattern. My favorites lie more in moments and genuine connection over mountaintop vistas. The mountains and landscapes will always part of my work, but I feel more attracted to capturing the essence of who these people are and how they connect with those they love.
This year more than ever, I left my personal agenda at home and listened more. It was my intention to make sure every person that worked with me felt like they had the best experience not only with me but also with the way they experienced their day. This mental shift has helped me feel more free in my work, knowing that I did everything I could to capture the day truthfully and serve my couples well. I’m leaving this season with a full heart and excited for the 2020 season to begin.
This year’s work also looks more emotional than ever before. For some reason, many of my couples this season experienced heart-wrenching loss. Several of my couples had lost one or both of their parents recently. Others had parents or siblings that were sick. I believe each of these stories deserves to be heard and shared, so I will speak more to them at another time when I have the space to honor them well. However, I felt like it was worth noting because the presence of this grief is exhibited in many of these frames. These types of stories are always a great reminder of how valuable photographs are and the importance of this work.
To all of my 2019 couples, families, and individuals: thank you for letting me into these intimate moments. It’s a privilege that I will never take lightly.
I’m starting 2020 with a ton of excitement. We have a lot of new plans and adventures planned for the season, and I cannot wait all that we’ve been working on behind the scenes.
If you want to trip down memory lane, here are my favorites from past years:
