The fog gripped the dense air, the faint light and the wet road as the sun rose. Everyone had traveled hundreds of miles to see the view at 6000 feet, but the clouds hugged the ground, obscuring the stunning landscape that surrounded us all. While their parents and siblings were still a bit groggy, Caroline and Chris were alert with anticipation and excitement.
In fact, they had hoped for fog.
With tears in their eyes, they promised forever. Everyone smiled. Pastries were shared from a picnic basket as the clouds rolled away for just a minute to show off the Blue Ridge Mountains. We all gaped at the view before the mist took over again, playing hide-and-seek with the peaks.
As we made our way to the pinnacle, the warmth of the sun tore through the clouds to give us the most spectacular morning vistas. We had the mountain to ourselves. With eyes full of wonder, Caroline and Chris took in the nature, each other, and their first day of marriage. The celebration ended with hot coffee and brunch at The Biltmore. Each person took turns reminiscing of the journey thus far and wishing happiness upon the newlyweds for the days ahead.
Rachel and Lee planned their Asheville elopement at Roan Mountain after postponing their wedding in Switzerland because of the pandemic. Their families rented a house close to Roan, and everyone met at the trailhead to hike together carrying quilts, a wedding dress, and coolers of food. The sun sparkled in the sky, but there was a heaviness in the air that signaled incoming rain. We continued along, hoping the precipitation would hold until after the ceremony.
